Waiting mode
Waiting mode is the state of being unable to engage with any task because something is scheduled later — a 3pm appointment that somehow cancels the morning. The brain treats the upcoming event as a tripwire it must actively monitor, and that monitoring occupies enough attention that starting anything else feels impossible or unsafe.
It’s closely tied to time blindness: if you can’t trust your internal clock to surface the appointment at the right moment, part of your mind stands guard all day instead. The fear underneath is usually “if I get absorbed in something, I’ll miss it.”
The most effective countermeasures transfer the guarding job to something external: an aggressive, trusted leave-alarm (tied to a physical action — “when it rings, I put shoes on”), plus deliberately small, interruptible tasks reserved for pre-event windows, so the hours before an appointment stop being a write-off.
